Overview

The Shinnecock Yacht Club Junior sailing program provides all levels of instruction to children ages 5 – 18. Our Junior program exists for one purpose; to teach our youth to love to sail. Our program has two trajectories: a Cruising path (Levels I-III) and a Racing path. Neither is above the other, rather it seeks to address the realization that some sailors (adults too!!) prefer to sail without racing while others prefer competition.

The program is open to members and non-members alike, (no sessions on July 4th)

Cruising Programs:

Sea Squirt Level (Ages 5 -7): Designed as a friendly and relaxed introduction to water and sailing culture for children 5 to 7 years of age. A fun and safe orientation to water sports and (most especially) sailing with the intent of preparing children for our Level 1 sailing class.
*No experience is required, only that they are comfortable around the water while wearing a properly secured life vest!

Dates: Sea Squirt programs are offered from 9am-12pm during the following time periods:

Session 1 – July 2 to July 6 (no programs July 4th)
Session 2 – July 30 to August 3

Level I (Ages 8-18):  Geared for those with no experience in a boat on their own. After completing the session, they will be able to identify the parts of a boat, rig the boat, leave a dock, identify the wind, and handle the basic functions of the boat.

Dates: Level 1 is a 1-week session and will be offered weekly from 9am-12pm. The first weekly session begins on June 25th and the last weekly session begins on August 13th.

Level II (Ages 8-18): Participants should have basic knowledge of sailboats (ok to be VERY rusty from the previous summer) and they will progress to better boat maneuvering, adjusting/trimming of sails to advanced maneuvers! It is usual for a sailor to enroll in this Level twice before mastery of the skills is acquired to move to the next Level.

Dates: Level II programs are offered for all ages in the mornings (9am-12pm) and afternoons (1:30pm-4:30pm) during the following time periods:

Session 1 – June 25 to July 6
Session 2 – July 9 to July 20
Session 3 – July 23 to August 3
Session 4 – August 6 to August 17

Level III (Ages 8-18): More advanced sailing skills and seamanship tailored to an individual’s skill levels. It is usual for a sailor to enroll in this Level twice before mastery of the skills is acquired to move to the next Level.

Dates: Level III programs are offered for all ages in the afternoons (1:30pm-4:30pm) during following time periods:

Session 1 – June 25 to July 6
Session 2 – July 9 to July 20
Session 3 – July 23 to August 3
Session 4 – August 6 to August 17

 Racing Programs:

Opti, 420 and Sunfish/Laser Racing programs are offered during the following time periods (1:30pm – 5pm).

There are 2 sessions for the race teams:

Session 1: June 25 to July 20 (no programs on July 4th)
Session 2: June 23 to August 17

A boat is required for participation. Each sailor must charter a hull from SYC or provide their own. There are a very limited number of Opti hulls for chartering. SYC strongly encourages boat ownership for racing, racing Optis can be easily acquired in the range of $900 to $2000 used or $3500 from the Dinghy Shop (Amityville, NY).  Please contact Paola Florez if you need assistance in looking for an Opti for purchase.

OPTI Racing Team (Ages 8-15, must be under 120 lbs): The Sailor needs to have completed one session of level 3 (or equivalent elsewhere), no prior racing experience is needed. This group will focus on making Sailboat racing one thing: FUN! The coach will be on the lookout for some experienced racers, but we are really looking for those who are new to racing and just want to try it. The coach will be taking them to some exciting regattas and sailors will gain experiences they will remember long into their adult years.

420 Racing Team (13-18 years old AND over 112 lbs by Summer):): Same idea as the Opti Team….to have FUN racing sailboats and meeting sailors from all over. We are seeking both those who have raced before AND those who are new to racing. The age/size limit is addressing the principle that these are larger boats that requires more size and strength to safely handle on their own. Opportunities to travel to numerous regattas from Orient Yacht Club to Westhampton Yacht Squadron and all across the Island! One session of Level 3 (or equivalent elsewhere) should be completed before enrolling.

Laser/Sunfish Racing Team (Over 12 years old AND over 130 lbs by Summer): Same idea as the Opti Team….to have FUN racing sailboats and meeting sailors from all over.
